Healthy LifeHealthy Life is Australia’s home of ‘feel good’. Cut down on deep-fried food. Deep-fried food contains acrylamide, a potential cancer-causing chemical. According to a BBC report , an ordinary bag of crisps may contain up to 500 times more of the substance than the top level allowed in drinking water by the World Health Organisation (WHO)! When I consume oily foods, I feel sluggish. Go for food prepared using healthier methods instead, such as grilled, steamed, stir-fried, or even raw food. Reduce your intake of fast food, fries, doughnuts, chips, wedges, and deep-fried food.

A healthy lifestyle can be yours. The great thing about being healthy is that it helps you feel good as well as doing you good. It’s about what you eat and drink. It’s about sleeping well. It’s about being physically active, and enjoying yourself without risking your health. Being healthy, physically active and socially engaged throughout your life has many benefits, especially as you grow older.

3 Eat mindfully In our fast-paced world, there can be a tendency to eat while distracted and shovel in more food than we need and, at the same time, miss out on culinary pleasure. Many of us will benefit from eating mindfully. Some things to think about here are avoiding eating when distracted, eating more slowly, and taking time to taste food properly. One particular thing to focus on is chewing your food thoroughly – not only does this help us savour food, it also assists the digestive process.

Giving up the ciggies means a huge change in routine for most smokers. In the first few weeks, try to steer clear of alcohol and any other triggers. For many, cigarettes and alcohol go hand-in-hand. Avoid places where people smoke and try to keep busy. Do something else to unwind – listen to music, meditate , keep active , connect with other non-smokers or try a new hobby. Replace workplace cigarette breaks with a walk around the block, or ‘freshen up’ in the bathroom – brush your teeth, notice how much better your mouth feels since quitting. Be kind to yourself, take it one day at a time.

Working across three domains – Youth, Work and Lifestyle – the Healthy Living unit excels in identifying the illnesses related to each. Within these three domains we are developing knowledge and expertise in the fields of health, health technology, and personalized health interventions. For instance, we recently built an online youth health platform that provides youth healthcare guidelines and allows parents to find the professionals and advice they need to make the right choices. We also aim to measure and monitor individual workplace exposure to toxic substances, and to give personalized health advice to people with obesity or diabetes.
