Living A Long & Healthy Life

Healthy LifeThe Healthy Lifestyles program seeks to address weight-related health problems for children by offering caring providers, family-centered treatment programs, highly trained educators and researchers, and strong community partnerships. Data shows clear differences between Member States in life expectancies without disability. At present HLY at birth in the EU is, on average, 17 years shorter than overall life expectancy for men and 22 years shorter for women. In the EU28, men can expect to live around 79% of their life in good health when women can only expect to live around 74% of their life in good health.

The indicator is calculated following the Sullivan method which is widely used by experts across the world since the 1970’s. It is based on prevalence measures of the age specific proportion of population with and without disabilities and on mortality data. Its interest lies in its simplicity, the availability of its basic data and its independence of the size and age structure of the population. The health status of a population is inherently difficult to measure because it is often defined differently among individuals, populations, cultures, and even across time periods. The demographic measure of life expectancy has often been used as a measure of a nation’s health status because it is defined by a single vital characteristic of individuals and populations – death. However, the measure of life expectancy has limited utility as a gauge of a population’s health status because it does not provide an estimate of how healthy people are during their lifespan.

When we’re feeling down, it’s tempting to turn to ‘quick fixes’ such as drinking alcohol, smoking, eating and using illegal drugs. Most of us should eat more starchy foods: try to include at least one starchy food with each main meal. Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but gram for gram the carbohydrate they contain provides fewer than half the calories of fat.

Let your children know they are not to blame for your illness. Explain this to them while keeping their developmental level in mind. For young children, it may be easier to say you aren’t feeling well or that you are taking medication to help you feel better. Older children can also be affected. They may be concerned about who will take care of them or what they can and can’t depend on. They may be more focused on how your mood disorder affects them than how it affects you. If they do not understand that your mood disorder is an illness, you may want to explain that you are going through a very difficult time but are getting help, and still care very much about them.

Each week, SEE for Yourself will post the Healthy Monday challenge in the daily announcements and CHEW’s peer health educators will be somewhere on campus with tips and giveaways. At the Y, we work with community leaders to make the healthy choice the easy choice in all of the places where people live, work, learn and play.
